Which mail program to use?

Hello all,

I am wondering what mail system should I use, I am going to be creating a mailing module and also I need to send mail using the php mail() ?

What mail system?
Why that mail system?
and any other information...

For sending individual emails, I like using PHPMailer. For mass mailings, I've had success using poMMo.

For mass email, you use poMMo, because it is effective? not occupy too many resources of the server(web server and mail server)?

If use php mail() to send out mass email, it was so slow. And it may even take too much resource from the server while it was sending the mass emails.

How poMMo solve the problem?

I right now need to be able to use the mail() function of php, I don't have a clue what I need to do to make this work, I do have sendmail and sendmail.postfix in the dir /urs/lib.

what do I need to do to use the mail() I am having setup a mail system that will be better but for now I need to be able to send activation email to people that create account

I don't remember the exact technology they use (it's been some time since I implemented it for a client) but I do not believe it used the PHP mail() function. I'm sure if you poke around their web site linked in my prior response, you can find more info. It was pretty painless to set up: the only tricky part in my case was figuring out how its database was set up so that I could write a few lines of code to have it interface with an existing user database.

Have you read the mail() manual page and studied the examples there (and quite a few users' notes as well)?

Thanks! I will read their site later on.

Just a few quick questions in case any one has the answer about poMMo.

1) first, sometimes, the mass email out may have many dead email addresses in the list. I am using qmail, so if I use poMMo, would these emails sent to dead email addresses will stay in my qmail's queue and keep on trying to send until they are expired? This is one of the problems I experienced before when using mail() to send mass email.

2) second, when mass emails are sent out, they get more chances to be marked as spam even they are to the real subscribers, specially, when you run this script from a sharing server. will poMMo be helpful in this case? or no different than mail()?

3) what i am doing now, is managing the list (subscription, unsubscription etc.) from my own site, but stop using my own mass mail program. Instead we offer the list, the the html page we want to mail out to to professional mail services, these kind services are getting cheapper and cheaper now. Of course, keep the mail list accurate and up to date is our duty. And any online subscripion has to be online confirmed before add to the list, to reduce the chances that be market as spam.
