Changing Mod for PHP file

Can PHP change file mode?

Every time I install wordpress, etc. I am often asked to change mode to certain number.

I wonder. Given that PhP is a server side script, why can't it change file mode by itself?

That being said, can PhP detect the mod of a file? Can PhP detect that a file is read only, etc....

Because PHP is commonly run under the user account that Apache is set to run as. On linux systems, this is usually "nobody" or "httpd" or "www". Either way, this user account won't have owner-level access to your files. Thus, PHP can't modify your files' modes just like you can't modify some other users' files on the server.

Yep: [man]fileperms/man, [man]is_writeable/man, etc.
