Move from Ruby on Rails to PHP?

I am working on a project being developed in Rails. Senior management are not happy with the slow progress (12 months and very little delivered). A straw poll amongst developers tells me that at least 70% of the application code is now complete. Senior management have been advised that the way forward is to keep the current Rails functionality and complete the rest of the application using a different framework, probably php.

I do not want feedback on which is the better language (after all this is a PHP forum!), or why the project is as been so slow to deliver. Neither do I want to color your views by adding my views here. However, I would be very interested in hearing from anyone who has attempted this - can it work (an application running two frameworks), pitfalls, etc. Does anyone know of a application successfully deployed in Rails and php?

Use CAKEPHP framework to build the application.

I've not worked with RoR, so cannot give any direct personal experience, but your post reminded me of this article I remembered reading not too long ago. I'd be interested to know if you think your project is a somewhat similar situation, or is there some other reason(s) you think RoR was not right for what you need to get done?

The obvious downside to using two frameworks is that you have two frameworks. Some mechanism for moving data between the two is necessary, and without additional work you don't get the benefits of some one or the other's features (PHP's session handling, for example: data saved in that won't be available in Ruby without first being able to identify the relevant session id and then deserialise the data).

I have worked in hybrid environments but never on an ongoing basis, only during migrations from something like ASP or ColdFusion to PHP.

In addition to CakePHP, the FUSE php framework also offers a lot of functionality that very closely resembles Rails.

However, "resembles" Rails is just that - resemblance. Porting the application is going to be a fairly significant process no matter which framework you end up using to mimic Rails.
