Create a virtual folder/alias folder in apache

Hi, i a newbie...

im using xampp server and i try to create a virtual folder it means it point to folder outside the htdocs. My document root is D:\xampp\htdoc. so when i open http://localhost it point to htdocs..

for example when i open http://localhost/dem its point to folder at directory C:\dem.

i try to edit conf file at directory D:\xampp\apache\conf\httpd.conf by add

<IfModule alias_module>


 Alias /dem/ "C:/dem"

ScriptAlias /cgi-bin/ "D:/xampp/cgi-bin/"

but its failed!

can it be done?
what are the steps ?

This post is in the wrong section, you should have posted in PHP Help >> Install maybe your answer will pop up faster there ...

To answer to your question, I dont think you can point to a folder outside your document root like that, but I`m no expert ...

bogu: I don't think the Install forum applies here since this has nothing to do with installing PHP. Granted, there isn't really any suitable place for this type of question (or the .htaccess/mod_rewrite questions we get here), so I'd say any general section such as Newbies or General Help is fine.

rahaiffi: What do you mean by "its failed" ? What happened when you restarted your webserver (you did restart the webserver, right?) and attempted to view the directory? Did you get an error message? Did you check your Apache error logs?

Your syntax looks fine as per the Apache manual.

yeah, i restart the apache and error mesage from mozila firefox is "Object not found! "

apache error log says:

[Wed Jan 30 09:34:31 2008] [error] [client 127.0.0.1] File does not exist: D:/xampp/xampp/htdocs/dem

its still read at document root...not at directory C:\dem

Oops, I thought he`s question was about configuring web server and not about mod_rewrite ...

Is the alias_module loaded (as per your httpd.conf file)?

EDIT: Perhaps your syntax isn't correct after all - try adding a final slash after the local path (e.g. "C:/dem/").
