PHP Sending E-mails

According to the w3schools.com website, PHP requires an installed and working email system, in order to send emails.

Can anybody tell me what king of program this needs to be, where I can get hold of one, and how I install it?

Just user your php.ini file from xampp to point to your ISP's mail server like I posted in response to your other topic. PHP's built in mail functions will take care of the rest.

Where in the PHP.ini file do I need to include my details? What details does PHP require? How do I use my hotmail email account, instead of my ISPs email account?

Look at the post. I told you already. You need to specify your ISP mailserver and ISP mail account to send FROM... not to. You need to be able to authenticate on your ISP's mail server because, as I explained in the other post, 9/10 ISP's do not allow SMTP relaying and block outgoing traffic on Port 25 unless the traffic passes through their mail server. It's a security tactic. The php mail() functions allow you to dictate to where to send to.

If you are with a hosting company this should be automatically set up, the mail function is to send email to the address of your choice. If you do not have your site hosted with a company i would recomend it as it can cost as little as $6.49/£3.50 a month.

Where do I find the details for my ISP's mail server? Where do I enter these, in order to configure PHP to use my ISP's mail server?

Who is your ISP? This information should be readily available from their support site. And, again, here's the snippet you need to look for in your PHP.INI file...

SMTP = smtp.west.cox.net
smtp_port = 25

; For Win32 only.
sendmail_from = myemail@cox.net

I removed my e-mail for security reasons but that way you can get the idea.

Ben, he's not using a hosting company. He's using Xampp on Windows from his home internet connection. I've got it working the same way he's trying to.
