Detecting Country

Is there a way to detect what country or language a person speaks. I'm designing a Shopping cart system and I am allowing the option to change the site language but I'm not sure how to go about selecting an initial setting to begin with.

The only thing that comes to mind at the moment is creating a different start page where they can click on there flag or have multiple languages posted there so they can select from theres. Which is a pain in the but when you trying to sell something you want them to be able to view the products immediately then change options as they go.

Any suggestions on how to accomplish this would be appreciated.

You would store the setting in a session and could use something like google page translator, alternativly you could have different pages with an if statement on the top of each page that check to see if the session has been set and if so redirect to the correct page.

You could also collect their IP address and serve up the appropriate page based on that... you'd be kind of making some assumptions but you could at least try that version then let them change if they prefer a different language.
