Hi guys, I am newbie here and I want to know PHP eventhough this is not my field. Guys can you advice me of the following query of mine: Is there any freeware PHP editor and database server? Your suggestion is highly appreciated. Thanks in advance...🙂

MySQL is probably the free DBMS most commonly used with PHP. PHP also has good support for PostgreSQL, another very good choice and also free.

As far as editors, search the "Echo Lounge" forum here for many options and opinions.

I use Crimson Editor. And if you're looking for an all encompassing dev environment. I recommend Xampp. It will install and configure PHP, MySQL, and Apache for you as well as allow you to run a FileZilla FTP Service.

Good day to all!

I am a newbie here at the forum, a newbie in Linux, a newbie in web server programming and a newbie to PHP. I just get acquainted to PHP days ago and after reading a few introductions, I got interested with it. Now, I plan to try it, using my own computer as the server.

I plan to install Ubuntu in my newly bought hard disk so I could have an access to Apache. I wanted to know if my computer can handle this and become a webserver for just even a simple dynamic web page that I could use in learning PHP and MySQL. My computer specs are listed below:

2.01 GHz CPU
1 MB RAM
40 GB HDD
256 MB Video

I hope somebody can help me with my setup. If there's a useful link here, could you please direct me to it. I would be glad to know. Thank you.

With 1 MB of RAM even the server install of Ubuntu might be a little tough*, but I am guessing you actually mean 1 GB of RAM, upon which you can use the desktop installation and run Ubuntu as your normal working OS. Since you are only using this as a local testbed, your specs are more than enough.

That said, Linux is not required to run Apache. For example, you could install Apache and MySQL on Windows using the official installers, and then manually install PHP using the zip archive. I am not sure about Mac OS X though.

the Ubuntu 7.10 docs say that is 1/64 of the minimum recommended!

It sounded good for me since I also want to know more about Linux. So, I guess using Ubuntu as my testbed would be more appropriate than my Windows XP.

Since you already bought another disk drive I guess you might as well proceed with a dual boot setup. One advantage is that if you actually use/administrate a Linux server for your production website, you will be less intimidated by the differences. On the other hand, you will have to get used to another operating system and its shell(s) right now.

The page concerning Ubuntu Desktop Edition states that "at least 256 MB of RAM is required to run the desktop install CD" and that "install requires at least 4 GB of disk space". However, the server edition supposedly has "automatic LAMP installation", but I have never tried it myself so I cannot say how good that is. The server edition might not have a GUI shell by default, so look out for that if you do install it (unless you happen to want to try out a command line shell without a fail safe GUI shell crutch).
