Stable Effective Session creation & destruction

Hi people, am working on a site that neds logging in & out.
I have used the session_start(); then $_SESSION['username'] = $username - which i had defined earlier. When I login, at times its able to re.gister the session(username), others it doesnt register the session(username)... I really need to sort out this...

To log out, I have a hyperlink to another page(index.php). I use -
unset($SESSION['username']); I have also tried $SESSION['username']=NULL; and also session_destroy(); as the first statement on the linked page.
However, when I try to type the address of the logged on page, I am still able to access the previously logged on account with the previously logged on username.

Please someone sort me out

Read the PHP manual on [man]session_destroy/man. You will find:

In order to kill the session altogether, like to log the user out, the session id must also be unset. If a cookie is used to propagate the session id (default behavior), then the session cookie must be deleted. setcookie() may be used for that.

I have not used cookies before... so lets first see if the earlier solution works...How do I unset the session id. I have no clue..
