I have been studying for a while (four books, video tutorials, online study), though feel some one-on-one help is needed to get down a few of the final pieces and get over the hump. In other words, virtually every piece of code I read is understood at this point. But writing anything new, more than basic stuff, remains outside my range.
The problem is my lack of ability to find any formal courses teaching this language. The colleges I have investigated leave PHP out of the curriculum.
The idea is to get actual tutoring (questions answered and stuff) while helping me modify the code on an existing website. Maybe a few days work part-time, possibly two weeks at the most, I figure. That way the site gets improved (adding pagination, checkbox/delete, etc., some admin upgrades) while I hopefully learn.
Advanced php knowledge is probably required, including facility with pagination, cookies and sessions, plus things like adding clickable emoticons in a custom-designed forum, and maybe html email with a handy admin form for making and sending a new page whenever wanted. Other things too. The site is meetchristians.com. Have a look to see if that level of programming might work for you.
The existing code (created by someone else) is pretty much all PHP4 and probably HTML3, regular font tags and tables, almost zero CSS, rather easy to read, even if many files are 20 pages long. There may be objects in one or two isolated locations (if memory serves me, files dealing with a couple cron-jobs). All the forms on the site are handled by PHP.
I will travel to your town, then find my own accomodations for sleeping at night and meals. Working together should take place in the mornings or afternoons or very early evenings, being done by 7-8pm. It can be at a library, Starbucks or your home. Or anywhere actually, because I have wireless broadband.
Anyway, if you can help, or know someone who mght, great.
