Site error and cant find a fix HELP

My site has been working well for over 6 months, then all of a sudden today I get errors when accessing any page that uses 'sessions'. these are used for log in to protected area's, and the login simply kicks the user out. In one area I get the following error message

Warning: Unknown(): write failed: No space left on device (28) in Unknown on line 0

Warning: Unknown(): Failed to write session data (files). Please verify that the current setting of session.save_path is correct (/tmp) in Unknown on line 0

I have spent about 8 hours scoring the web to answers to this problem, but nothingI can understand. The site is hosted by a complany (startlogic) and they havent responded to my Email yet (seems the live help doest work).

Is this something I can somehow fix, or is it a problem only the hosting people can resolve. Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I dont have a clue where to start :-(

They probably updated their servers, and has cause problems for you.

Keep emailing them and they should be able to tell you whats happened.

The likely root cause is that some script/process on the server has filled up the /tmp directory, probably an error log or such. A possible work-around is to set up a directory in your own user space to use for session files, and then add/modify a .htaccess file in your root web directory to use it instead of the system default.

.htaccess (note leading period in file name):

php_value session.save_path /path/to/your/account/public_http/session_data

You'll need to set global read/write/execute permissions on the session_data directory (or whatever you want to call it).

I have tried to reach them on the live chat, but it doesnt seem to work. Left it up for an hour and nothing :-(

I will try the above, once I figure out where everything is. I did locate the .htaccess file, but when i open it (using notepad) the only thing in it is

Options -Indexes

Just add a new line to the .htaccess file with the line I suggested above (edited with applicable directory names, of course). The good news is that this confirms that your host configuration allows for the use of .htaccess files. 🙂

Well tried changing the .htaccess file, but it generates a new set of errors :-(

now, instead of the php files using sessions not working, it also displays this at the start of the page

I suspect that path is invalid. Run the following script:

echo $_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT'];
?>

It should print out the absolute path to your web root directory. Just copy-and-paste that output to replace the /globalnavalstrikeforce.com/public_html portion of the path you specified in the .htaccess file.

well, tried that and it still hates the path lol been on hold now with tech support, 55 min and counting lol horible music too lol

I ran the code and got the proper path (/home/globalna/public_html/) but here is what is shows now

oh one last thing, created the folder seeion_data, and it has permission of 755 (even 777 didnt help)

It will almost definitely need 777 permission.

I want to thank all for the help, but looks like the problem runs deeper. Startlogic were not a lot of help, there reply was scrub all the databases and start over. When I tried to back up database files it these errors

I am about ready to tell them where to stick there site and find someone on the planet that can actually host a site AND offer support.

Now that im calmer, I want to thank eveyone for the help. Seems I will probably have to reenter the entire database by hand :-( That should take about 3 months, as the upload function says "restore successful" but actually puts nothing up there lol

I think I will have to do a lot more learning to try to make the site as hacker proof as possible, as it looks like that is what happened :-(
