URL Rewriting

Ok. This has been frustrating me for some time now. I am trying to make SEO friendly URLS.

I have want to rewrite this:

http://www.mydomain.com/events/index.php?events=42&title=car-auction

I want to make it:

http://www.mydomain.com/events/42/car-auction.html

The event number (in this case is 42) will be changing and could even go to three or four digits.

I have this but it isnt working for me:

RewriteEngine on

RewriteRule ^events/([^/]+)/(.*)\.html$ events/index.php?events=$1&title=$2

I hope someone can help. Ive been stuck on this forever.

Well, I'm not that up on URL rewriting, but you could do some simple splitting out via explode() then reparsing the data back together. Here's an example:

function reparse($url)
{
$url_array=explode("?",$url);
$dir_array=explode("/",$url_array[0]);
$new_url="http://" . $dir_array[2] . "/" . $dir_array[3];

$params_array=explode("&",$url_array[1]);
foreach($params_array as $param_item)
  {
  $temp_array=explode("=",$param_item);
  $new_url .= "/" . $temp_array[1];
  }
$new_url .= ".html";
return ($new_url);
}

save the function and call it like this:

$new_url=reparse($url);

This is just off the top of my head, so there may be errors. Plus, I'm sure there's much more efficient ways of writing it with preg_replace() or something...

How so? I copied your code and placed it in a .htaccess file in the root of my website, made a PHP script at events/index.php, and used the URL you used as an example above and got this in the PHP script:

Array
(
    [events] => 42
    [title] => car-auction
)

So... are you POSITIVE that you named the file .htaccess (e.g. are you viewing file extensions if you're working on Windows?), and did you place this file in the root of your website?
