Best table design for optional fields?

I have a table in which all of the fields are required, except for one. Would it make more sense to leave this optional field in the table, or create a separate table just for this field?

There's a simple answer and a complicated answer. The simple answer is: use the same table. The complicated answer is worth listening to, sometime, when you get a couple of steps advanced in DB design, but even the complicated answer will end up being "use the same table" about 85% of the time.
