[RESOLVED] Parse error returns blank page

Hi, I'm new to PHP, so please be patient with me. :-)

All I get is a blank screen when I forget a semi-colon, and it's really hard to find the error by commenting out lines.

On my web server I get a nice error message on the web server, like this:

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_STRING in /home/churchw1/public_html/db/test/test_turn_on_error_reporting.php on line 8

But on my local machine I get only a blank page.

I'm running WAMP on my local machine and using Siteground.com for my web server.

My local machine will report other errors, but not a missing semicolon, and it's driving me crazy. 😕

Try reading this. It might be in the ini, the level of error reporting.

Putting this on the top line of your code should work though:

error_reporting(E_ALL);

You should also set display_errors to On in php.ini

Note that turning on display_errors within the script will not show parse errors if it is turned off via your config settings, as the ini_set() is processed after the script is successfully parsed and the command is then actually executed at run-time. Therefore you will need to set display_errors (and perhaps also the error_reporting level) either globally in your php.ini settings or by directory via a .htaccess file in order to see those parse error messages.

Thanks for the quick replies. It seems I had a conflict between my Apache config file and my php.ini file.

When I commented out the following line:

#php_value error_reporting PHP_INI_ALL

Then the php.ini settings started working right away:

error_reporting = E_ALL | E_STRICT
display_errors = On
