Variable Assignment Won't Work

Hi there. I was just curious as to why this code won't work.

srand(time());
$random = (rand() % $last;

$Last is just a number.

You have a syntax error. It should be:

srand(time());
$random = rand() % $last;

Actually, you do not even need to call srand(). Since PHP 4.2.0, the pseudo-random number generator is automatically seeded.

Oh, thanks for the reply but that actually wasn't my problem. I have been trying random combinations of parenthesis and semi colons and such, that I just copied the whatever I had tried last. I'm afraid the code you gave still is giving me an error.

Parse error: parse error, unexpected '<' in /home/www/squarewheelgames.com/carrots.php on line 128

Any idea where this is coming from?

And thanks, I removed the seed.

No. You will have to post the code around line 128.

Oh, ok then. I'll upload the file.

Here is a webpage running the file.

The page was built in Dreamweaver originally, so it is rather hard to edit in Notepad (Which I've been doing). You can basically skip everything before <?php though.

Line 128 is:

<!-- Use loop to make sure $random isn't $imgNbr -->

The problem is that this is a comment from HTML in the middle of PHP code. It should be:

/* Use loop to make sure $random isn't $imgNbr */

or:

// Use loop to make sure $random isn't $imgNbr

Oh, I see. I had no idea PHP couldn't use any HTML code before today. It must really get frustrating having to switch back and forth.
