Can someone please give a working example of how to use mysql_real_escape_string() to 'purge' a string that will be passed into a sql query?

Have you looked at the [man]mysql_real_escape_string/man page yet, in particular Example #3?

Yes. I'm not understanding where %s %s %d is coming from or it's purpose/syntax.

You'll want to take a look at the [man]sprintf/man function for that. They are place-holders for the values specified by the 2nd - nth arguments to sprintf() or printf(), with the way those values are interpreted and formatted depending upon which place-holder is used and how it is used.
