Do you know what character set the XML file is using? (It should be in the <?xml?> tag.) If it's some version of "unicode", you may have to use the PHP [man]mbstring[/man] functions in order to cope with it. In any case, since it appears it is sending a special fraction character rather than 3 separate "1", "/", and "2" characters, you will need to some sort of string replacement on it ([man]str_replace/man, [man]preg_replace/man, or [man]mb_ereg_replace/man).
