[RESOLVED] limiting a print

how can i get it so that if im printing a string like

echo "<div class=\"crumbs_btn\"><a href=\"reply.php?id=".$id."&category=".$category_id."&title=".($pagename['subject'])."\">New Reply</a></div>";
echo '<div class="crumb_bar"><div class="crumb_text">';
		echo "&nbsp;&nbsp;<a href=\"index.php\">Forum Index</a> / <a href=\"forum_topic.php?t=".$category_id."\">".$category_title."</a> / <font color=\"#000000\">".($pagename['subject'])."</font>";

though i would like ".($pagename['subject'])." to be kept smaller so that if it it 100 words long and my space for printing it is to small it would print "first few wor..." since its for navagation i it dosnt have to be complete cos currently its running out the lines.

substr dosnt seem to do what i want

im looking for Print max string length = (30(maximum length of the string)) "string of words goes here";

Incidentally, you could also write:

echo (strlen($string) > 30) ? substr_replace($string, '...', 30) : $string;
