Can a script be created that simulates a user pressing the F11 key on the keyboard, in order to make a browser window full screen?

Thankfully not.

The only way you can hijack somebody's screen like that is with Flash. Just don't do it without asking the user first!

closest you can get is a pop up that detects a user screen size and opens a screen that size without the status navigation or history bars

Edit: From reading around, it looks like you could theoretically do it with an event - say an onMouseOver or onLoad, possibly, and then something like:
<body onload="event.keyCode=XXX;">
Where XXX is the ascii keycode for F11.

You may have problems though:
"17==CTRL 18==ALT 46==DEL

I just wouldn't do it period, if I were you. I like my users to NOT hate me. 😐

Edit: further reading suggests there IS no ascii code for F11, so you may be out of luck, thankfully. 😐

for those that want to test it themselves; just make that html and open it up in a browser then start tapping keys to see their codes.

Only firefox friendly just now, because i'm lazy. I can't remember what IE has instead of charCode.

edit: Interesting, if you replace e.charCode with e.keyCode some of the special keys like tab work but none of the letters work... Updated code to work with keyCode and charCode

Any resize Javascript probably won't work on my FF configuration (see attached). 😉

That's just the standard Firefox settings, brad.

Preferences > Content > Advanced button (on Enable Javascript line)

On FF3, at least.
