Creating a PHP interface that hits a mySQL backend

I have a database that contains names, places, and several other fields.

ID - University Name - Group Name - Website - Email

Now I would like to have a way so that I can choose 'University Name' and have it display all the groups that are a part of that university. Or vice versa. Thats part 1.

One could interpret this question in several ways:

• What is the SQL statement to retrieve the group names given a university name, and to retrieve the university names given a group name?

• What are the PHP classes and functions that I should provide in order to model universities and their groups?

• What are the ways that I can allow the user to select groups by providing the university name, or to select universities by providing the group name?

What exactly do you mean?

Ok I'll try to explain this easier.

I'm creating a directory of a cappella groups that will be searchable by the public.

When a user connects to the website.. they are able to search by a few different ways.

From a drop down they can select the state, university, the group name by letter. I would also like it to be able to search using keywords.

Then when they hit search it will display the results for that query on the site.

Part 2 is I have a complete list of Zipcodes in the US.. and I want to be able to have a visitor type in their zip code... select a radius.. and get all groups within that radius.

It looks like you have a pretty clear view of what you need to do, so what's preventing you from implementing the solution?

Whats preventing me if my lack of experience with PHP... I'm fine with HTML and Flash but when it comes to PHP and mySQL I'm very very green.
