[RESOLVED] regular expression help

i am currently using

$comment = htmlspecialchars($_POST['comment']);
$comm = '<p>'.preg_replace('/[\r\n]+/', "</p><p>", htmlentities($comment)).'</p>';

this turns all new lines into a paragraph, but it affects ALL new lines, what I would like to change it to is so it doenst affect a single new line, but will affect 2 or more

so...

line 1
line 2



line 5

turns into

line 1
line 2

line 5

currently it tuns into

line 1

line 2

line 5

Change the "+" to "{2,}".

Or "[\r\n][\r\n]+" ... "one and then at least one more".

for some reason both of those are still giving me a single line break still with a </p><p>

You might be getting "\r\n" as the line break, in which case you'd want:

'/(\r?\n){2,}/'

$pass1 = '<p>'.preg_replace('/[\r\n][\r\n]{2,}/', "</p><p>", htmlentities($comment)).'</p>';
$comm = nl2br($pass1);

You don't state what your data source is, but if by any chance it ever comes from a UNIX/Linux system that just uses "\n" (no Windows-style "\r\n"), that might be a problem. Therefore my last post might be a more portable solution.
