Using XAMPP for the first time

I just installed XAMPP and I wrote my first code and named it hello.php. I try to see it using the following URL: http://127.0.0.1/hello.php.
It states that the object is not found. DO I need to save my file to a specific directory? Do I need to use another path?

FYI: I extracted XAMPP to:
C:\Documents and Settings\Main\Desktop\xampp-win32-1.6.6a

All I want is a workable environment to test my php code. Any info is appreciated!

I believe that the default configuration for XAMPP is to create a web root directory named "htdocs" somewhere under the XAMPP install directory. Your file will need to be in that directory to be accessed as "http://localhost/hello.php", or in a sub-directory of it as "http://localhost/sub_directory/hello.php".

I saved the file to the following directory and the object was still not found.
C:\Documents and Settings\Main\Desktop\xampp-win32-1.6.6a\xampp\htdocs

Any suggestions?

Is Apache running? I believe there should be some sort of icon in the "system tray" at the bottom right of the screen. Left- or right-clicking on it should give you some option to stop/start it, and maybe to check the status, too. (Sorry I can't be more specific; I have WAMP running on my PC, so I'm going from memory from over a year ago.)

With Wampp u run Apache_run.bat and a command window opens saying apache 2 is starting.... It never does anything else.However I do go to http://127.0.0.1/ and it works only when that command window is up so I assume that Apache is running correctly. I believe the problem lies with the directory of either wampp or where Im saving my php files. Do I need to include anything specific in the code to have it point to the right directory?

There should be a httpd.conf file for your Apache configiguration, and it should have an entry for "DocumentRoot" that points to the document root directory.

If you have successfully installed the xampp you can got to windows,

START -> ALL PROGRAMES -> APACHEFRIENDS -> XAMPP -> CONTROL XAMPP SERVER PANEL

to view the control panel. This will list all the modules which is currently running on your machine. Check module apache , if its not indicating as running click on the Start button to start the apache server.

FYI: there is a check box in front of every module which says Svc. check it so next time you dont have to manually start the server instead now it will start as a windows service.

I'm still having issues getting my code to display. I save as example.php in the htdocs folder. I then ho to my localhost page and put the name at the end of the url and nothing happens.
