New to PHP: Quick question

I've been reading some online tutorials and while I understand some of the basic things about PHP, I still feel as if I don't know anything at all.

With that said, the online tutorials explain how things work etc. but I find myself not knowing what to do with what information. For instance, I will read a section of a tutorial, try to understand it to the best of my ability and not have anything to code. I figure the only way I'm going to learn this stuff is if I actually get my hands dirty in code.

So, how did everyone learn php and what should I be coding to HELP me learn and retain what I read?

Any help is appreciated.

There is no 'short-cut' to to become SKILLED in PHP.
Everything must take it's time .. in life.
If we do not invest OUR TIME .. we do not get GOOD KNOWLEDGE
