Career innings pitched in a database

I've got a database of pitchers and their innings pitched... now I've got to create a script that updates/inserts their career statistics into the database when their profile page is loaded.

Say a pitcher pitched 5.2 innings one year, and 5.2 the next year... when I add those two together to insert into the db, it's doing to come out as 10.4 innings pitched, when it should be 11.1.

Another example...
2.2 innings
2.1 innings
2.2 innings

It's going to come out as 6.5, obviously if I'm just adding, instead of 7.2... any idea how I should go about doing this? kinda stuck and have been putting off the pitching career stats for a month due to the innings problem.

I guess it would be more of a General help problem.

I think I might be more inclined to store the values as n.0, n.3, or n.7 (.3 for 1/3 inning and .7 for 2/3). Then you can sum them and get the correct value. You would then need a simple function to convert it to the typical baseball (confusing) nomenclature, perhaps using str_replace() or preg_replace() or just a simple switch.

PS: I just re-read what I posted, and realized there would be a problem with, e.g., 2.3 + 1.3 + 4.3. 🙁 Let me think about it some more....

OK, I think what I would do is store innings in the DB as an integer number of 1/3 innings. So 2-2/3 innings would be "8". Then when you retrieve it, the display value would be:

echo (floor($innings / 3)) . '.' . ($innings % 3) . ' innings';
