attempting to set up php w/mysql and get: Error 1064

Big problem. I am new and need help. I am using xp, downloaded wamp and am attempting to create a password for mysql and I get error 1064. This is what the error reads:

ERROR 1064 <42000>; You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to user near 'WHERE user='root'' at line 3
mysql>

Don't know what this means.... I am a designer this stuff is foreign to me. Any clue to what I should do would be very helpful.

It's pretty hard to tell without seeing the entire SQL query as it was submitted to MySQL. The only "meaning" we can give you right now is just what the error message says. The 1064 error is a fairly generic message that unfortunately does not tell you a whole lot by itself. To resolve it, you will need to go to the PHP source code where that query is constructed and sent to the database, and possibly put in some debug code to echo the query or write it to a log file so that further analysis and debugging can be done.
