Help With Recursive Renaming

I have been searching on the net for the past few days for a php script that will recursively rename about 20,000 mp3 files and the directories they reside in to take out all spaces and special characters so they will work with a digital download store script...

I am not a coder although I do have alot of experience working with php scripts...Just not enough to write my own script to do what I need done...

I tried getting around not having to rename all of them by using encoded urls in the database but that isn't working as when a purchase is made and the download link given to the customer it says the file doesn't exist...

Although I am aware I could just rename them on my local machine and just re-upload them I don't want to go that route as I don't want them named that way on my hard drive and don't have space to make copies of each one...

I may just get another drive to do exactly that but am looking for a script to avoid uploading all of them again!

The script needs to rename all the files and directories recursively taking out all the spaces (replacing them with underscores) and all special characters such as `~'&,.

If anyone could direct me to a script or point me in the right direction to achieve this I would be eternally grateful...I would even be willing to pay for it if necessary...

20,000 files is quite a bit. Your server would give a Fatal error. Today i ran a simple script to print out every number from 1 to 10,000 and it sent out a fatal error around 7000

Thanks for the reply...Sure...I can see where that might be a problem but what I could do is run the script on the individual directories instead of the main music directory...as in 'beats', 'cds', 'albums', 'instrumentals', 'pellas', 'singles'...Which would break the operation up into smaller chunks...

You could use [man]glob/man to build an array of files, then do a [man]foreach[/man] loop on that array. Within the loop, use [man]rename/man along with [man]preg_replace/man, something like (untested):

chdir('/directory/where/files/are/located');
$files = glob('*.mp3');
foreach($files as $file)
{
   rename($file, preg_replace('/[^\w\.\-]+/', '_', $file);
}

Note that any such solution if executed via a web-launched script will probably require that both the directory and the files have write permission for all.
