career advice

Hi everyone! I need some career advice. i am an Bachelor of engg. passed out in 2007, i want to make career in s/w development. i've done courses in JAVA,J2EE.i searched job for 2 months. Now i got job in php development. so i've started my training in PHP.i found it similar to JSP & easier than JAVA. so, i want to know about future scope in PHP.what you guys suggest,should i continue with PHP or go back to JAVA?

Do whatever you're comfortable with for now. PHP is continually growing, so it has a future.

Ultimately the choice is yours. Probably your best bet is to continue developing in both and use whichever language suits the project.

for web, PHP IMO will continue to grow and dominate over the next few years. As far as I can tell I do not see any current technology surpassing it in terms of how widespread it has become. PHP is the popular choice for many reasons, 1 for being easier to learn, 2 being open source and freely distributed, it's also very well documented and integrates alot of useful technology.

Now in terms of career, for all those same reasons competition for jobs will become tighter as more and more developers enter the stage. My company put out a job posting only the find 1 out of every 4 that called were outsourcing requests.

So the question becomes will PHP be able to feed everyone's family in the long run, that question I am unsure of. But if you want to do strickly web, if (Platform !== ".net" ) PHP > Java

Because I will say, .net does seem to be a pretty poweful tool

Sorry, couldn't resist. Given my experience of engineering students, that was exactly what I was expecting to read next.

Be a language slut. Have one-night stands with as many programming languages as you can cope with, try to keep several relationships ongoing at once and if you do feel the need to settle down, try to arrange a ménage à trois. Life's too short for monogamy. This is not necessarily to be considered good advice for all situations. Adding paprika: now that's good advice for all situations.

I'm with weedpacket - try out as many languages as you can. Thats what I have been doing and still am when I have the time.

Study nursing, become a registered nurse, and have as many employment opportunities as you want. This will solve two problems: you'll be gainfully employed the rest of your life, and there will be less competition for me. :p

That all depends upon the nurse 😉 More likely it's the Paramedics that come to his home every other day for some non-reason that will do more care than a nurse 😉 You know, for when he has a hernia just getting up from the toilet....

Actually, an interesting coincidence: when I was in the hospital last summer for my appendectomy, there was a nurse-in-training there whom I'd worked with a few years ago on the same IT project. She'd decided she didn't care much for the business and so enrolled in a local nursing school, instead. That must've been in the back of my mind when I wrote my last post, but didn't consciously think of it unitl Bpat so kindly reminded me of the last time the EMTs came to give me an ambulance ride. :rolleyes:

haha, it must be a consequence of IT but I was actually considering leaving IT for EMT/Healthcare industry, it just seems so personally rewarding and fullfilling, that was until my cousin who is a nurse said umm.... no, its not like scrubs at all

Now you see, that's just not true. If you get into it because you think you'll make money, you're wrong. If you get into it because you like it, and you're interested in it, then you'll have just as much fun as the characters on scrubs.

ER is a better depiction of a real ER though.... long wait times and ambo crews schmoozing with the staff.

Although the best representation of an EMT is Mother, Jugs, and Speed. It's an old Bill Cosby movie, but I'm sure some of you may have seen it.

the money isnt terrible from what i saw, my friend's gf graduated a 4 year course in nursing, got herself a 60k job. Says she has to do disguisting things to people though, that would be my downfall, walk in and be like "wtf is that! jesus that gross" walk out

thank u guys for ur suggestions,i really appreciate it. hi NogDog, i'm not leaving IT industry at any cost, sorry dude!but that was nice try...About nursing there is another coincidence,in college my friends used to call me J.D. from scrubs.

I'm with u laserlight fr ur comment on nogdog.tell him not to worry about old age.B'coz, i know some good nurses so can arrange someone fr him in ur old age...neways jokes apart .thank u!!!

I think the big money is in java. But better than that, I think the most rewarding job would be a system architect...someone who actually doesn't write code but speaks in English and UML. I'm sick of coding; its like taking out the trash.

Seems to be more money in .NET from the job adverts I see. In the UK anyway.

If you don't like coding I think your in the wrong job 🙂

Haha, I started getting into Java, and java people were telling me the money is all going to PHP
