Dynamic Image Generation

I've been searching, for a few days now, on how to dynamically generate an image when linking to the image itself rather than linking to a php file.

I see this method all over the place where you just open up somesite.com/image.jpg and every time you load it, it changes.

Could anyone explain what is required to achieve this or point me in the correct direction?

php script and just mod rewrite so its got a jpg extension, at least that's what i do.

Ok, I kind of got it working(Thanks). If I put <img src=http://mysite.com/image.jpg /> on a web page it works but, if I use the img tag for a forum, it doesn't even show up. It's weird because when I view the source of the forum page it has <img src=http://mysite.com/image.jpg />. Any ideas why its not showing up? And yes, the forum does allow images to be posted via bbcode.

Aha! I put [L,R,NS] at the end of of the RewriteRule and, Viola! Thanks dagon, I didn't know about Mod_Rewrite until you told me.
