Simple query question - news pages

So simple I can't figure it out!

Can someone please tell me how commonly coded news articles linked from a news page appear like this:

http://www.bridge9.com/article/56

and not like this?

http://www.bridge9.com/article/pagename.php?newsid=56 (example only)

I hope this makes sense, I'm just trying to find out how and why some things are done while I learn PHP/MySQL.

usually with mod_rewrite, google it and you will fin a million examples
