[RESOLVED] Picture Link To Carry Variable Data.. Possible?

Hi,

This may be a crazy question, but I have a situation where I want to be able to click
on a picture link and be able to have a variable assigned with the link so when the
link page open, I can ID the picture that was clicked on.. IS This Possible?

Yes, by using the query string of the link's URL, e.g.,

<a href="index.php?image=nogdog.png"><img src="nogdog.png" alt="NogDog" /></a>

Then on index.php you check if $_GET['image'] exists using [man]isset[/man] or [man]empty[/man].

In your example, lets say I want to assign the picture a variable; for example $picnumber, would this substitute the =nogdog.png (=$picnumber), or would that have to be written different? Thanks for your help on this..

It is the same. You are not really assigning a variable to the picture, but providing a link with a query string (a set of name/value pairs). As such, you can use it with an image, or with text, and it makes no difference in how the name/value pair is processed.

One last question on this is; is this information stored server or client side/ or is it not stored at all, just Get query string from page to page?

by the way, ive always wondered what is the purpose of the php? (Particularly the ? at the end of the php)?

It is not stored at all.

The "?image=nogdog.png" is the query string. If you take a look at the address of this page, you will see a "showthread.php?t=10353681". "showthread.php" is the page name. The "php" is not significant other than denoting a file extension, but URLs do not necessarily correspond to file names. The "?t=10353681" is the query string, and denotes that the name "t" corresponds to the value "10353681". More name/value pairs can be appended using "&name=value", but of course you would encode "&" to "&" in your HTML code.

THANK YOU laserlight! you're a great help here, and I really appreciate your time on the information you provided for me.. I now can use this to procede finishing my webpage.. I have been remodifying my family tree website to use databasing, and I never really got into the $GET scripts but only $POST which requires input. The $_GET is ideal for the member to click on an image and have that image identified on the process page for redirection..

RFC 2616: Method Definitions

The latter is section 9 of RFC 2616, so it may be a little too technical for your taste (or maybe not).
