Getting XHTML-MP to work

I can get an index.xhtml file to work which is valid XHTML-MP. However, when I change the extension to .php it give 500 internal server error.

I tried to set the header to both the XHTML-MP headers and the standard XHTML headers and no luck with either attempts.

Could this mean that my server does not support the XHTML-MP MIME type? I know that XHTML works on my server and I think that XHTML-MP is a subset of XHTML so shouldn't it work if I serve it as XHTML.

Can anyone help me with this? Thanks!

500 errors are so generic it's hard to tell, other that it is some server-side issue. One possibility to check first is that the .php file has execute permission (not just read permission). This might be a cause if your server runs PHP in CGI mode. (I know it can be an issue with Perl CGI, scripts, but not sure about PHP CGI.) Other than that, it can result from an abnormal script termination due to a faulty installation or environment, etc., so about all you can do is check the PHP and web-server error logs for anything that gives a clue as to what is happening.

PS: Something else that just came to mind: If PHP's short_open_tags option is enabled and you are using <?xml ... ?> tags, this could be causing problems/confusions. In that case, you should echo out the <?xml tag:

echo '<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" ?>';
?>

(Or turn off the short_open_tags option if that is possible.)

I just got the template working for now. It passes validation from the W3C validator. I think I'm good to go from here. Thanks for your reply!
