concatenate href

How do you concatenate this $file shows up for the showname?

This is not working...

$thelist .= "<a href=\"page2.php?showname='.$file'">$file</a><br>";

I would write it as:

$thelist .= '<a href="page2.php?showname=' . urlencode($file) . '">'
         . htmlspecialchars($file) . '</a><br>';
