Why is all my code growing?

:rolleyes: Hey, stupid topic name but its true...

I'm in development of a two year project, we're working in a team of too and its about finished, because its a script were developing for sale and it will be spreading to a lot of users we need to get an answer or atleast try!

My co-worker uses Vista Ultimate and i use XP, i think its something to do with sending files from one OS to the other and its causing problems... What's happening is when he codes say 400 lines in one file, and i go to perhaps look at it or do some edits, its adding a blank line under every other line... so 400 lines of code can double to 800... and i have to filter thru all the lines, removing the blank ones... now we have about 50+ files with 10,000+ lines of code... its getting to be a big problem....

I'm just wondering if anyone has an answer, i thought it would be dreamweaver but it seems not to be the case as its still doing it.

Now if its a compatability issue with Vista to XP, anyone on XP that wants to edit the files will need to do the same... this making our script very anoying and we could loose alot of profit just from this :o

UPDATE: Co-worker ran some tests, logged in on vista made 2 files... 1 in Dreamweaver and another in phpDesigner 2008... his laptop (on XP Home) shows no issues with XP Home which is good... I'm now not sure if its XP Pro causing the problems or just my PC, i hope its my PC...

UPDATE2: Ran more tests.... found out it was Ipswitch FTP program... guess i'll have to find another program. 😃

Bit more indepth answer just incase anyone has the same problem... you can fix it by going into your opitons and setting transfer to Binary... I found out it wasnt just FTP program it was transfer settings 😃

It could be some confusion between editor settings and/or FTP settings regarding whether to use UNIX-style line endings of just newline characters, or the Windows style (really MS-DOS style!) of using carriage return + newline. To ensure maximum portability, I'd suggest making sure all editors and FTP clients be configured for the UNIX style of just using a newline. (Don't worry, it will still work on Windows servers, it just won't look nice in Windows Notepad.)

Note that the default mode of ftp is to transfer text, where the ftp programs alter line-endings to match the operating system they are running on (as NogDog noted). Switching the mode to binary disables this.
