I have a table that is setup like f:

table1
field1 field2 field3 field4
5 20 20 6

another like:

table2
field1 field2
3 5
4 20
5 20
6 20
7 10
8 17
9 20
I need a single query that will give me all the records where t1.field2 OR t1.field3 OR t1.field4 OR t2.field2 = 20.... I guess i need to join but I have not had success... I get repeatative results....

Do you want the results from table1 or table2?

both - one of the issues I am running into is that what I need to return from table2 is a value from another field not shown, but for table one, I simply need to know if the field = '20' for example... make sense?

i think, that if you join the tables you'll join each line of table1 on each line of table2;
you need a UNION i think to glue the results together

SELECT field1
FROM table1
WHERE id=20
UNION
SELECT field1
FROM table2
WHERE field1=20 OR field2=20 OR .....

I am getting the following error:

The used SELECT statements have a different number of columns

do they have to have the same # of cols? is there a way around this?

It sounds like your database is not sufficiently normalised. For starters, I suggest that you read the PHP Builder article on Database Normalization and Design Techniques.
