PHP MySQL Search Help

I don't think I have one of my sites setup right for searching.

So this site has a textinput field where users can type in a search string, it will look it up with mysql and give you results.

Let's say you search for Battery Power and the result "bullhorn battery power" is your only match. well If I try the same search with say "horn battery power" it does not come up and it should. The query in mysql I use is %$string%. what am I doing wrong to help pull up results that should be pulled up?

Actually I think I found the issue:

$query = "SELECT * FROM items WHERE 1 AND product LIKE '%$search%' ORDER BY product $limit";

I deleted the bold and it worked
