Upgrading PHP when installed with LAMP

I installed PHP as part of LAMP which i got from the distro (ubuntu), meaning i installed lamp as part of the distro.

Now a new php version is here and i would like to upgrade, i tried to do a sudo apt-get upgrade php5 but that didn't work.

Any suggestions?

You may have to compile PHP yourself, in which case your mileage may vary - the ./configure, make, make install routine could work out of the box, or you could end up with dependency hell.
