date_format fatal error

Yesterday my code was working fine and today when I went to my site I have this error.

Fatal error: Cannot redeclare date_format()

I changed it to date_frmt() and the error goes away but then it tells me that the cookies are enabled. Can anyone please tell me what's going on?

date_frmt is not a core function.

If it worked yesterday and it doesn't today without any code changes, it is most likely a server issue. Were there any server updates overnight?

It would not surprise me to find out that you were running PHP4 and created the date_format function, then your host upgraded to PHP5 and now your script throws that error cause the date_format function is in PHP5.

They said yes but not how to fix the problem. I'm new to PHP and do not understand or even know how to take care of the date_format. All I know is that if I change anything (even comment it out) I get the message saying that I need to enable the cookies but they are already enabled.

I would ask them if they have an option of running PHP4 as a CGI script.

Most hosts won't just switch to PHP5 and leave PHP4 users in the cold.

you can just get an IDE that allows to find and replace ocurrences on all files and then change your date_format function to something else

It would be corect in the past, but today I don't think so. Zend warned developers to switch to PHP5 due to discontinuing PHP4 over 2 years ago, and fully discontinued it months ago. Any sysadmin knows better than keeping obsolete/discontinued software running on the servers.

The best option available is the "in rome..." solution. even if they somehow support support php4, they'll inevitably remove it later

Unfortunately what you state is true. Furthermore, it also reinforces a friends thoughts on PHP.

PHP3 has HTTP_ globals and in PHP6 they will be removed completely.
