[RESOLVED] header() help

My domain routes to my hosting root. From time to time I have it (temporarily) sent to a subdirectory while I'm doing maintenance and stuff. I usually do this with

header("Location: ./offline");

Now I want to route this domain to a subdirectory for an indefinate amount of time without fussing with my hosting provider.

Is there any reason I shouldn't just do this the same way?

Are there search engine implications doing it this way?

Any guidance is appreciated.

To make it search engine friendly, turn it into a 301 permanent redirect:

header("HTTP/1.1 301 Moved Permanently");
header("Location: http://www.yoursite.com/new_location/page.php");

(Note that to be HTTP/1.1 compliant, you should always use a full URI for your location headers.)

doing it from Apache in a .httpacess file would seem to be better than having to put it in a php file

Thanks Nog. As for the HTTP/1.1 compliance, does that apply to all relative paths (such as internal folder navigation) or just this 301 redirect?

It applies to all "Location:" headers, though I suspect all the popular browsers will cope with relative paths anyway; but you might as well do it right, just in case.
