Problems Installing PHP6

Hi everyone... I am long-time Windows user. Once programmed credit-card networks under Windows. Now want to learn Linux.
Got book at Frys & installed Ubuntu 6.1 which came with it. Smooth. Then set up Apache 2.2.8. Some configuration issues
but it's running well now too. Then came PHP6. Configuration terminates with: "Unable to detect ICU prefix ... make sure icu-config works."
Have been trying to solve this for 3 days. Got icu4c installed but doesn't solve the problem? Also no config-icu anywhere on icu tree.

Anyone have a solution? Would be much appreciated.

Seeing as PHP6 is still in development, perhaps you'd be better off with PHP 5? (I believe 5.2.6 is the latest stable version.)

Yeah I tried PHP 5.2.6 originally. But it bombed out with Bug #16069
(ICONV failue) and when I couldn't find a solution, i decided to take
a chance on 6.

Now Im considering reinstalling Ubuntu 8.04....

if you're on ubuntu, can't you just apt-get install php5?

Okay I reinstalled 5.2.6 per NogDog's suggestion. Everything went smooth.. the configuration, make and make install. It doesn't work but I believe the problem has to do with my specification of the LoadModule in httpd.conf. Can anyone tell me what this specification should be under Apache2 & PHP5? I cannot locate any php so files on my disk. What specifically should the php file, which is to be loaded, be named? Again, I'm using Ubuntu 6.1, Apache 2.2.8 and PHP 5.2.6. Thx.
