Ideas for Beginners

I am new to PHP and don't fully understand all of PHP's capabilities. I like working towards a goal and find that is the best way to learn. So this brings me to my question.

For those newbies out there like myself who are new to the programming world and need some starting points, I was wondering if some of you experienced, seasoned professionals could offer some ides for some basic web programs for a learning experience a well as some pointers for getting started (for that particular idea)? This would be great for someone like myself to go through and pick out an idea and work toward that goal.

My idea since I am deployed to Iraq at the time was to create a graphical countdown timer to display based on a form submitting the details of when to count down to, etc.. However, I want to stick with PHP only so that idea is out as it would require javascript.

PHP can do graphical drawings, of course you would have to use JS to update the counter, or reload the page every minute/timeperiod.
