Is $l a number? If so, the problem might be due to the fact that you would be creating an invalid name value, as the HTML specification says:
ID and NAME tokens must begin with a letter ([A-Za-z]) and may be followed by any number of letters, digits ([0-9]), hyphens ("-"), underscores ("_"), colons (":"), and periods (".").
(From http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/types.html#type-cdata)
Of course, the above would also disallow the use of "[]" in a name, which still seem to work with PHP, so maybe this has nothing to do with anything.
Perhaps it would help to see the HTML/PHP source for the form and form-handler?
