Photos resize

I have a question concerning resizing photos.

I currently resize the uploaded fotos and divide into thumbnails and medium sized photos so that I can display them without using up too much CPU. The views of the photos are much more frequent than the uploading so I am guessing that I am doing this in the correct way. I actually want to save a large version of the photo too so I will have 3 sizes. Is this reasoning flawed in any way? Does anyone have any suggestions for me? Is PHP (my current method) the best or is there something perhaps in javascript which would imply that I only need to save one file?

Would be very grateful for any comments or suggestions.

I am not sure, but I THINK that if you specify the size at which an image is to be displayed, the server will only upload the sub-sampled image.

That being said./. You might not want everybody to be able to get the large image by just opening only the image; I do the same: I store a smaller res image for gallery and larger ones for final display

If you only save a full resolution image, your server must transfer that to the client regardless of any Javascript, HTML, etc. limits you impose on the image.
