Major Performance Issue

Hopefully someone can help and get this cleared up.

I have two machines (Development and Production)

Development - Dell Gx270/Win2k/2Gb Ram/PHP 5.1.2/MySql5
Production - Dell Gx280/WinXP/3Gb Ram/PHP 5.1.4/MySql 5

On my Dev machine doing a file upload (file size 7.5Mb) it takes approx. 15 seconds.

On the Production machine same file it takes approx. 3 minutes to upload.

Any thoughts?

Is this via FTP or HTTP upload?

In addition to laserlight's comments, you might also consider network load - does the production server have any roles other than a web and database server? Is it possibly busy serving other clients as well?

Using the figures you provided, your average upload rate to the Production server is approximately 42.6 kb/s. That seems average for a residential cable or DSL customer (mine, for example, is capped at 30 kb/s). Are you observing this latency at home while your Production server is hosted elsewhere?
