Transparent layer in Image

Hello

I´m doing a new design for my website right now and I would like a function so that is you hold your mouse over the big news image a thin gray transparent layer would be on top of the image but I cant get it to work.

I have tried with some CSS and stuff but I still dosen´t work so I would really like some help.

I´m using a Javascript so that on my new design it changes a big image every sixth second to a new image and it is on that image a would like this function but as I said I have tried some diffrent ways but I cant get it to work. So now I´m wondering how to do this function, is it best to do it with CSS or Javascript? And how do I do?

Could you set the big newsitem as the background of a div, and then set the hoven of the dif to show a greyscale image with:

filter:alpha(opacity=50); / Internet Explorer /
-moz-opacity:0.5; / Mozilla 1.6 and below /
opacity: 0.5; / newer Mozilla and CSS-3 /

??

Or of course set it as background, grey scale image in the div present but not visible, and change into the alpha filtered version on hover /
