Installation necessary?

Ok so I've recently started studying php, and I'm not planning on hosting my own server. I'm planning to buy a server from some web host which offers the php-feature.

When I put some php code into my html file and uploads it into my website, it displays everything correctly. At least I think it does.

For someone who doesn't host his/her own server, what is the reason to install php on his/her computer? Isn't it enough that the web host is offering the php-feature for everything to work?

I am probably missing something here. Appreciating all responses.

Having it on your own local computer is handy for testing and experimentation before you upload scripts to your live host.

All right! I suspected that, but I got confused because in the installation guide on php.net it says to install your http:// server on your system before you proceed with the php installation. Since I'm not going to host my own server I got confused.

In order to test your scripts as they will run in a web server environment, you will want a web server installed, too. You'll probably also want whatever database server you'll be using. There are a number of all-in-one installation packages you can use to greatly simplify this process, such as Wampserver for Windows (which I like to use) or XAMPP for several different platforms (including Windows).
