How to check hyperlinks are valid

Hello,

I am new to this forum, so I hope I have posted in teh appropriate category.

I am trying to work out how to check if a hyperlink is active or dead.

To do this I would need to do 3 things.

1. Locate the hyperlink in the database record (These hyperlinks are in text, so I'll have to work out a way to locate and extract the hyperlinks.
2. Activate the hyperlink
3. Check to see if an error has been recorded on the other website.

Can anybody point me in the general direction of where I could find some information showing me how to do any of the above steps?
