Regular Expression

Hey all,
I have some data like mg-st-005.xyz.pqr.dyd .
I want to have the string mg-st-005 ( string before the first "."(dot) )
I have tried that using preg_match

preg_match("/(.*)\./",$host,$matches); 

But the above gives me mg-st-005.xyz.pqr and I want to have mg-st-005 only..
can you please help me?

Regular Expression's are not the only way, and for simple tasks slower

$match=substr($host, 0 , strpos($host, ".")-1);

I was just behind preg_match and not thinking other way....!!! Thanks...It did worked..

You could also resort to using string tokens as such:

$x = "mg-st-005.xyz.pqr.dyd"; // your example data string
$x = strtok($x, '.');
echo $x;

Result: mg-st-005
