[RESOLVED] Follow link and close parent window

I hope I won't be upsetting anyone with a question that is rather aimed at JavaScript.

What I want is a way for a user to click on a link and close the parent window.
Example: A link/button to another page that will close the window containing the link.

I hope I made myself understood 🙂

hm...

I think you need to make sure that the previous window has a name, and then you might be able to do
window.NAME.close

Is it going to be something like:

<a href=mylink.php?execute=this onlick="window.THIS_WINDOW.close()">Execute & Close Window</a>

?
I've seen numerous examples on the web and neither one worked for me...

The problem is that if your original windows was not generated by javascript, it might not have a name.

Brings me to wonder: Why would you want to do that anyway? Can't you just keep all the processes i nthe same window? Most users are old and wise enough to decide they want a new window, or close one?

No, the original window wasn't js generated and I would rather find a way to do it like this. There would be too much trouble for me to alter the application just for that matter :o

so.. the issue has been open for over a day. What have you done to help yourself? I am actually quite surprised that when I felt bad for you, and decided to have a tinker, my first google search resulted in a tutorial..

Thanks leatherback. As you know the 4th July Holiday is approaching and preparations had to be made. I didn't have a chance to fiddle with it lately but I can call the thread solved since I got so many suggestions that must be tried 🙂
