[RESOLVED] Dropping POSIX support question...

If I understand correctly (and correct me if I'm wrong) PHP6 is supposed to drop POSIX (ereg) support in favor for PCRE? If so, I am left wondering.. when it comes time for hosting sevice providers to upgrade to PHP 6, what will in all likelyhood be the circumstances?

Will they typically support both PHP 5 and PHP 6 but leave the default to PHP 5 until the webdeveloper is ready to request a change over to PHP 6?

The reason I ask this is because my personal site utilises a mix of both preg as well as ereg (don't ask why). Should I go through my site and convert all eregs to pregs so that when PHP 6 arrives, my site will be 'PHP 6 ready'?

I believe the plan is to make it a PECL extension instead of a core functionality, so it will still be available, though you may have to explicitly install it.

Yes.

In fact, in my opinion you should already have done so - the POSIX functions were deprecated with the release of PHP5.

I had no idea it was already depreciated. The reason behind some POSIX is because I was learning that first.. so I resorted to ereg when coding my site before learning preg.

Damn depreciated systems. :glare:

Well, that pretty much settles it. PCRE it is (not that I have a problem with that)!

Indeed, the PCRE functions adhere more strictly to the familiar regexp syntax across other coding languages.

The PCRE functions are also, it is said, faster (and offer more functionality) than the POSIX group.

No disputing that. Just that had I learned PCRE first (perhaps ONLY PCRE), would have made life simpler in the long run. Live and learn I suppose.
