I developed a job tracking system a few years ago and it's due an upgrade!

What is the best way of notifying users when a new job/task/account has been added or amended?

The system is multi-user. Meaning the notifications must be user specific.

Any suggestions welcomed.

The system is multi-user so each user has an account/ or just an email and an ID just to recognize him/her... so you may want to send notify messages to their email addresses... by the mail() function...

I swayed away from mailing updates as the user would end up with a full inbox!

I want a Facebook style notification system.

well, you need to create a table where notifications will reside ( with a date field )... / and a php page where notifications will be shown and i guess this page should be within the member area... and you may want to sort your "feed" ( notifications ) by date...
