Individual user directory

Hi everyone, I'm brand new to PHP. I'm creating a website for a lawyer. He wants each registered client of his to have their own password protected directory so he can share confidential files. It's easy to create one password protected directory that many users can access but how do I have multiple users each only able to access one personal directory? Also, I'd like this personal directory to be automatically created when each user account is created.

Going out on a limb here.. why not just setup FTP accounts (which can be restricted on many levels)?

The webhost he is using doesn't allow for more than one FTP account. Thanks though

Then he needs to change webhosts. It's not your job to reinvent the wheel cause he doesn't want to buy one, so to speak, and it's way cheaper to get virtual hosted machine that you can setup how you like than to reinvent it in php land.
